Samhain, celebrated from October 31st to November 1st, is one of the oldest and most important festivals in the Celtic calendar. It marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, a time when the boundary between the physical world and the spirit world was believed to be at its thinnest. During this time, people lit bonfires, held feasts, and performed rituals to ward off evil spirits and ensure a good harvest for the coming year.
In modern times, Samhain has evolved into what we know as Halloween, with many of the customs and traditions rooted in ancient Celtic beliefs. The wearing of costumes, carving of pumpkins, and the belief in spirits walking among the living all trace their origins back to Samhain. Despite its commercialization, Samhain remains an important cultural celebration in Ireland, with many people still observing its traditions and honoring its historical significance.
